Performance Tips

from the Kentucky State Fair, but apply for the preliminary, too!

 

1. Clean up the quality of your tape.
Professional companies can help you with the following:
a)   Remove background vocals or purchase a tape without background vocals
b)   Remove instrumental breaks or abrupt endings.
c)   Change the tempo or key of a song.

DO NOT PROCRASTINATE!!! Your tape may not be completed on time if you wait until the last minute.
2. Choose upbeat, fast tempo songs. Motown, Rock & Roll, and Pop Songs from the 60s, 70s, and 80s grab the audience and judges' attention. Popular Musical and Broadway hits also work well.
3. Singers ... sing a song that shows off your ability and is within your range. Avoid contemporary songs that cause people to compare you to the original artists.
4. Practice holding a microphone.
5. Be comfortable with your props, other equipment or anything that you'll be using.
6. We use a black backdrop on stage, Wear a costume that will show up. Bright colors work great!
7. Make sure your costume is appropriate. For example, some songs are good for formal dresses and others may require a character costume.
8. Make sure you can walk in the shoes you'll be wearing on stage.
9. Don't fidget or play with your costume, hair or jewelry on stage.
10. Wear appropriate stage make-up so that you can be seen from the stage.
11. Watch a video of your performance and critique yourself.
12. Your performance should tell a story... know who/what you're portraying. Stay in character on stage at all times!
13. Don't look at the floor. Keep your head up and be proud.
14. Have your own style. Make yourself stand out.
15. Use the entire stage.  The stage at Franklin County Fair is 16 x 32 with a 4 x 16 foot lighted runway.
16. Remember that the audience and judges see you enter and exit the stage. Stay in character and be professional at all times.
17. Know that the judges are looking for: Natural Ability, Quality of Performance, Showmanship, and Audience Appeal.
